Oil Lamp

This is an African oil lamp from the mid-19th century. It was found in Algeria. The people who live in the Kabyle region along the Mediterranean coast in northeastern Algeria are farmers. They are also fantastic artists are recognized for their jewelry, textiles, mats, basketry, pottery and house murals. In North Africa, wheel-thrown pottery is from the 7th century B.C. To this day, Kabyle women coil and decorate pottery. In Kabyle, women hand build vessels in different sizes and shapes for holding water and other various objects.
